Wikipedia Breakout Session At BarCamp Kumasi 2014

Barcamp Kumasi 2014 was a free networking forum bringing people together for a day of discussion, demos and dialogue on Kumasi, Ghana and beyond. It took place on November 1, 2014 at the College of Science of Auditorium, KNUST. The theme was "Youth Entrepreneurship: Celebrating Our Heroes".

It gave youths the opportunity to meet other youths in their fields of interest for mentorship which is called Speed mentoring,

There were mentors from fields such as; Technology, Entrepreneurship, Sanitation, Medicine and others.

I was at BarCamp Kumasi as a bar-camper and a Wikipedian. I had a breakout session on introduction to Wikipedia and what it takes to become a contributor to Wikipedia, first of all anyone, yes YOU can also contribute to Wikipedia: The Free Encyclopaedia.

The breakout session's main purpose was to present how the Wikipedia community works. I was glad I could answer a lot of questions from participants, making it very interactive.

One thing that came up was Kejetia Market and Kumasi Central Market was taken as one market on Wikipedia whiles in reality it's not. And it was an interesting argument...

Not to forget, some people (Wikipedia readers) are scared of hitting the [Edit] button on Wikipedia. They're not the first though, I was too :). But it's fun and interesting when you know.

At the end of I session distributed some Wikipedia swags; tags, pens, markers and stickers sent by Rexford. Thanks for sending them Rex.

Everyone was willing to share their knowledge with the whole world through Wikipedia. I was glad when all decided to sign up and join the Wikimedia Ghana UG community, and have followed up already.

Peace Corps Ghana #HackMalaria Hackathon!

Hiey Guys,

Is been a long time. :D

Two weeks ago I was at Mobile Web Ghana in Madina, for Peace Corps Ghana's #hackmalaria hackathon.. The hackathon was in collaboration with Mobile Web Ghana and Coders4Africa.

Malaria still remains the number one killer in Ghana.

The Goal of this hackathon was to develop apps that will raise more awareness about malaria.

As a newbie developer (Always a newbie huh! :-D). I was very glad meeting advanced and newbies like myself at this hackathon.

During the hackathon we were also joined by Patrick Choquette and Matthew McAllister of Peace Corps’ Department for Innovation in DC via Skype-in during lunch to show their support.

I was glad to say hi to Patrick via Skype too :-) thanks to Peace Corps Mapdown and other OpenStreetMap related projects; such 2014 West Africa Ebola Response :-). If you want to help create a free digital map of Ghana and the world then let's talk, so I can help you get started!

Meeting new people is no exception to hackathons, I was glad to see some good old friends and meet new ones too.

Have You Heard of Wiki Loves Earth in Ghana 2014?

I guess some you might have seen Wiki Loves Earth on the web. If not you can now via all social networks is just @wikilovesearth and hashtag #Wikilovesearth

Do you know how it feels when you see a photo by you (Yes I mean you the one reading this) used to illustrate something on Wikipedia or any Wikimedia Foundation project? Then come help during Wiki Loves Earth.

What's Wiki Loves Earth all about?

Wiki Loves Earth is an international photo contest of taking pictures of natural heritage that took place in May 2014 and still ongoing in Ghana, Germany, India, Algeria, and more here till June 30th ,2014.

I want to cut it short.

So why am I sharing or writing about this? Am inviting you to come share your photos of natural heritage sites in Ghana (taken now or earlier) with Wikipedia and sister projects.

It's simple, this image should be your own work, When uploaded it must be released under CC-BY-SA-3.0.

BarCamp Accra 2013 - More Than Awesome #BCAccra

By now I know my readers know what BarCamps in Ghana are like and some of you had the opportunity to attend, if you still don't know, this this will help you out.

Thanks to +Google Maps and my Google Map Maker boss +Felix Nartey no problem locating the venue this time. I found myself at The World Bank (Head Office) as directed. 

Hehe! The World Bank doesn't share money oo! Like someone was thinking. I love the place 99.9 % I will use the 0.01% for Lotto :-D.

The theme was "Exercising Ethics to Engineer Excellence" and the panel discussion for BarCamp was all about how we can deal with corruption in the Ghanaian community. 

As usual there was Speed mentoring session, which is like speed dating but you learnt via +Kuukuwa Manful

During the speed mentoring session, the rest of us in the conference room led by +Mac-Jordan Degadjor witnessed an awesome game known as "Chinese Whispers" you wanna what it is? Next time make it to nearest BarCamp, Ok? But I will tell you. 

Someone whispers something to you and you also whisper to someone till the last person. The last person will let everyone know what was whispered, afterwards the one who commenced will tell us all the right word. It was fun. The word that started was "Photowalk" but +Donald Ward  changed it to ... guess it.. are you correct? #Tonga. lol!  #tonga did not reach the last person. It was fun. :-). The last person's answers were funny. You just can't laugh. The reaction when someone whispers to you..... lol!


Breakout sessions were organised, was in  +Planning Wikimedia Ghana's Content Creation (Wikipedia) session organised by +Enock Seth Nyamador (myself) and +Felix Nartey. You can read about this session soon on PWMGH's blog.
 I also joined the Creative Writing breakout session led by +Kinna Likimani
BarCamp Ghana: Matching Twitter handles to faces via +Delalorm Semabia. So new and old faces met. I met +Doris Anson-Yevu +Felix Nartey +Sena Quashie +Senam Aseye Bridget +Roger Gaisie +Omane Ossei-Poku +oliver akindes  +nathaniel ALPHA +Akua Akyaa Nkrumah  +Kwabena Akuamoah-Boateng +Edmund Laryea and etc. Hey! wait +Ela Asare  .. just can't complete.

BarCamp Accra Accra ended with the Ghana National Anthem, Yen Ara Ase se ne, and Arise Ghana Youth. You can read a full recap of Barcamp Accra by +Mighty African here . Hope to see you at next BarCamp.
